Join me on a February cycling adventure through the rolling hills of Piacenza as I ride to two of the most beautiful medieval gems in northern Italy: Castell'Arquato and Vigoleno Castle. Despite the winter chill, this journey through history and stunning landscapes was unforgettable. Starting from Piacenza, I pedaled through quiet countryside roads, passing vineyards and small villages before reaching Castell’Arquato, a perfectly preserved medieval town. Perched on a hill overlooking the Arda Valley, this historic village dates back to the Roman era and flourished in the Middle Ages. Its imposing Rocca Viscontea, narrow cobbled streets, and medieval architecture make it feel like stepping back in time. After taking in the breathtaking views, I continued the ride towards Vigoleno Castle, another incredible medieval site. This fortified village, surrounded by massive walls, was once a stronghold of the noble Scotti family and remains one of the best-preserved castles in Italy. Walking through its stone-paved alleys and seeing the stunning Romanesque church of San Giorgio was a true highlight of the trip. The route was a mix of challenging climbs and rewarding descents, offering spectacular panoramas of the Piacenza hills. Even in winter, the beauty of this region is undeniable. If you love cycling and history, this is a ride you won’t want to miss!
