Anogeia by Bike: Crete’s Legendary Mountain Village Ride

Cycling in Crete is never just about the ride: it’s about immersing yourself in history, culture, and raw landscapes that test both your legs and your spirit. In this vlog, I take on a 100+ km mountain route from Roussospiti to Anogeia, a village forever marked by its resistance and sacrifice during WWII.

The journey begins near the sea, climbing steadily inland through Perama, Axos, and Zoniana, where quiet backroads reveal Crete’s rugged interior and endless views of Mount Psiloritis, the island’s highest peak. The ride reaches its emotional peak in Anogeia, a place of steep stone streets and a powerful monument to the victims of the Nazi massacre, a reminder that these mountains have stories carved into every ridge.

After paying tribute, the descent towards Zoniana brings a rush of speed, narrow bends, and raw beauty before the punishing midday heat makes the final climb back to Roussospiti a true test of endurance.
